If you’re house hunting in the Triangle, there’s a good chance Cary, Apex and Holly Springs will all end up on your list. They’re close to one another, all have plenty of amenities, and it’s possible to commute between them fairly easily.

But that doesn’t make them interchangeable. Where you’ll be happiest can depend a lot on where you are in life, what you can spend and how much driving you’re willing to do.

Here’s how to think about the three.

Cary Is Hard to Beat for Convenience

Cary’s location is a big part of its appeal. You’re well positioned for trips to Raleigh, Durham, RTP and RDU, and there’s no shortage of shopping, restaurants, parks and everyday necessities nearby.

That can make Cary particularly attractive if you commute, have a busy schedule or just don’t want to spend a lot of your week in the car. There’s also a good mix of housing, including established neighborhoods, townhomes and newer construction.

Of course, plenty of other buyers want those things too. Your budget may not stretch as far in Cary as you’d hoped, especially if you want a larger home or lot.

If location is near the top of your list, though, giving up some square footage to stay in Cary might make sense.

Apex Can Be a Happy Medium

Apex has grown a lot, but it still has a distinct downtown and a little more of a small-town feel in places. At the same time, you’re not giving up the shopping, restaurants and conveniences you use every day.

That makes Apex an easy place to consider if Cary feels a little too expensive or you simply haven’t found the right house there. You may find newer homes or more space while still staying reasonably close to the rest of the Triangle.

Just don’t go into the search expecting Apex to be the inexpensive alternative to Cary. It’s become a popular destination in its own right, and prices reflect that.

Holly Springs May Make Sense If You Want More Space

Keep heading south and Holly Springs becomes another option, particularly if newer neighborhoods and a little more breathing room are high on your list.

For someone working from home, raising a family or simply spending most of their free time close to home, that can be a great trade. Holly Springs has plenty going on locally, so you don’t necessarily need to drive into Cary or Raleigh every time you want dinner or need to run errands.

The question is how often you’ll need to leave the area. A commute that seems manageable once or twice can feel very different when you’re making it five days a week.

There’s No One “Best” Triangle Suburb

You might love Cary now because you want to be close to everything, then find yourself wanting more space in Holly Springs a decade from now. Or Apex might give you exactly the balance you’re looking for.

Rather than choosing based on reputation alone, spend some time in each town and pay attention to what your normal week would look like there.
